Profiting From Nonprofit Work
In Party Like a Rock Star, I have half a chapter dedicated to free stuff you can get from volunteering. (I call it fauxlanthropy.) Here is an abbreviated version published in Frontiers Magazine:
When most people consider doing volunteer work, they think of helping other people. But really, it’s not selfless work. Volunteering gives people a reason to feel smugly happy for having done something good—if not downright morally superior to regular people. And though that special glow you get afterwards is reason enough to donate your time to a good cause, I’m here to tell you about a whole bunch of other, more direct benefits from doing these deeds.
Most volunteer projects that cater to a young crowd also serve as dating services. The large majority of volunteers I’ve met doing various projects are not only unmarried, they are also unattached. I guess committed couples are too busy sleeping in on Saturday mornings or going shopping for antiques to help the less fortunate. Some volunteer organizations advertise that their projects cater to singles, and a ton of people show up looking to meet a “nice guy.”
